From 24–26 July 2026, Nigerian professionals from across Germany came together at Helsunger Hof in Mücke, Hessen, for the NNPG Retreat 2026, a three-day physical gathering centred on the theme “Connect, Build, Elevate.”
Organised by the Network of Nigerian Professionals in Germany (NNPG), the retreat brought together professionals from different industries, career stages and backgrounds for a weekend of learning, networking, career development, entrepreneurship and community building.
The retreat was designed to address the realities of building a professional life in Germany — from navigating the German job market and immigration pathways to career advancement, workplace challenges, financial planning and entrepreneurship. At the same time, it created room for something equally important: friendship, relaxation and genuine community.
The programme was deliberately structured around networking, career growth, personal development and community.
Creating a Sense of Belonging
The retreat began on Friday, 24 July, with an atmosphere designed to help participants settle in and connect.
Following arrival and check-in, participants took part in a welcome circle and icebreaker activities before moving into career networking, a communal dinner and an evening of informal conversations and socials. The opening activities were designed to encourage participants to interact beyond professional titles and begin building relationships in a relaxed environment.
The evening also included conversations around “The Nigerian Professional Identity in Germany” and “Balancing ambition, culture, and integration in Germany.” These discussions helped establish the broader tone of the retreat: professional advancement matters, but so does the experience of building a life and identity in a new environment.
A Saturday Focused on Growth and Opportunity
Saturday was the central professional development day of the retreat.
The day began with wellness activities and informal networking before moving into structured power networking. The speed-networking format encouraged participants to introduce themselves, share their skills and identify opportunities for collaboration.
The programme then moved into career and immigration discussions.
Immigration & Career Mobility
The Immigration & Career Mobility session examined some of the practical questions that affect Nigerian professionals building their lives and careers in Germany.
The session featured Burkhard Volbracht, Uzoamaka Audu, Dr. Katrin Ohlau and Waliyat Kola-Aderoju, with Oluwaseun Oguntade serving as moderator.
The discussion addressed issues surrounding immigration and professional mobility, including permanent residency, citizenship, job-change rules and the differences between freelancing and employment. These were particularly relevant conversations for professionals navigating the intersection between career decisions and immigration status.
Growing Your Career in Germany
Career progression took centre stage in another major panel, “Grow Your Career in Germany.”
The panel brought together professionals from different career backgrounds, creating a multidisciplinary conversation about career advancement in the German professional environment.
The speakers were Chioma Nzekwe, Olalekan Elesin, Barbara Ogechi Madu, Dr. Katrin Ohlau and Waliyat Kola-Aderoju, moderated by Dr. Chigozie Nweke-Eze.
The discussion focused on issues including hiring expectations, strategies for professional growth and workplace dynamics — giving participants perspectives from different professional environments and career paths.
This complemented the retreat’s wider emphasis on practical career development, which included CV reviews, mock interviews, salary negotiation and LinkedIn/Xing optimisation.
Addressing Workplace Challenges
The Workplace Challenges for Immigrants panel created another important space for discussion.
Featuring Mike A. and Iheoma Obasi-Nnadozie, and moderated by Dr. Collins Ndibe, the session explored some of the realities immigrants encounter in professional environments.
The programme specifically identified cultural misunderstandings and navigating workplace dynamics as areas that needed open discussion.
Rather than treating these challenges as isolated experiences, the session created an opportunity for participants to learn from different perspectives and consider practical ways of navigating professional environments in Germany.
Financial Planning for the Future
Professional success also requires financial clarity, and the retreat addressed this through the Financial Planning, Insurance and Investments session.
The session featured Rajani Peters, with Dr. Chigozie Nweke-Eze as moderator.
The conversation brought financial planning into the wider discussion about building a sustainable life and career in Germany, reinforcing the idea that professional development should also be connected to long-term financial security and planning.
From Career Conversations to Practical Opportunities
The retreat went beyond panel discussions.
Participants had access to industry breakout rooms, where professionals could connect according to their fields, exchange job leads and identify collaboration opportunities.
The Career Clinics then provided practical support through CV reviews, mock interviews, salary negotiation and LinkedIn/Xing optimisation.
The Opportunity Marketplace created another avenue for engagement, with job openings, referrals, business ideas and collaboration requests forming part of the experience.
For entrepreneurs, the retreat also provided space to present business ideas through the Startup Pitch Session, while the Open Mic & Storytelling session allowed participants to share their career journeys, experiences and lessons from living in Germany.
Building Community Beyond the Professional Agenda
What made the retreat different was that professional development was not the entire experience.
Sports and networking activities provided an opportunity for participants to relax and interact outside formal sessions, with activities including football, swimming and lawn tennis.
The Gala Dinner offered another opportunity for participants to connect in a relaxed setting, while the communal meals, conversations and social activities helped strengthen relationships formed during the retreat.
Sunday brought the weekend to a close with reflection and goal-setting, giving participants an opportunity to consider what they had learned, who they needed to follow up with and what their next career move would be.
A Retreat With a Lasting Purpose
The NNPG Retreat 2026 was ultimately about more than three days in Mücke.
It was about creating a stronger professional community for Nigerians building careers and lives in Germany.
From immigration and career mobility to career advancement, workplace realities, financial planning, entrepreneurship and networking, the retreat created space for conversations that directly reflect the experiences of Nigerian professionals in Germany.
And beyond the sessions, it created something just as valuable: relationships.
As the retreat programme envisioned, participants left with new contacts, new skills, greater clarity and a stronger sense of community.
