Building a career in Germany requires more than qualifications.
It requires understanding the market, knowing how to position yourself, navigating workplace expectations, building relationships, making informed career decisions and, sometimes, knowing who to ask for advice.
These were some of the realities explored at the NNPG Retreat 2026, held from 24–26 July 2026 at Helsunger Hof in Mücke, Hessen.
Under the theme “Connect, Build, Elevate,” the retreat created a practical platform for Nigerian professionals in Germany to learn from experienced professionals, engage with recruiters, discuss workplace realities and explore new career and business opportunities.
The programme featured more than 15 curated sessions covering career development, immigration, workplace integration, networking, entrepreneurship and personal development.
Understanding the German Professional Landscape
A major focus of the retreat was helping participants better understand what it takes to build and advance a career in Germany.
The Saturday programme opened with the “Cracking the German Job Market” keynote, designed to address practical strategies for navigating the German labour market and positioning oneself as an international professional.
This was followed by a series of conversations that moved from entering the German professional environment to progressing within it.
The Immigration & Career Mobility panel brought together Burkhard Volbracht, Uzoamaka Audu, Dr. Katrin Ohlau and Waliyat Kola-Aderoju, with Oluwaseun Oguntade as moderator.
The conversation addressed the intersection between immigration and professional life, including issues around career mobility, job changes and navigating different professional pathways in Germany.
For professionals building their lives in a new country, these are not abstract issues. Career decisions can have implications for immigration status, long-term settlement and professional direction, making access to informed perspectives particularly valuable.
What Does Career Growth Actually Look Like?
The conversation then moved from mobility to advancement.
The “Grow Your Career in Germany” session brought together Chioma Nzekwe, Olalekan Elesin, Barbara Ogechi Madu, Dr. Katrin Ohlau and Waliyat Kola-Aderoju, moderated by Dr. Chigozie Nweke-Eze.
The panel provided different perspectives on professional growth, hiring expectations, workplace dynamics and strategies for progressing within the German professional environment.
Rather than presenting career development as a single formula, the diversity of the panel allowed participants to consider different professional experiences and approaches.
Addressing the Reality of the Workplace
Career progression does not end when someone gets hired.
For international professionals, adapting to workplace culture can be an equally important part of the journey.
The Workplace Challenges for Immigrants session addressed some of these realities, with Mike A. and Iheoma Obasi-Nnadozie as speakers and Dr. Collins Ndibe as moderator.
The session created space to discuss issues such as cultural misunderstandings and navigating workplace dynamics and office politics in a new environment.
These conversations are important because some workplace challenges are difficult to discuss openly. Having a professional community where experiences can be shared creates room for learning, perspective and practical support.
Turning Advice Into Practical Tools
One of the strongest elements of the retreat was that it did not stop at panel discussions.
Participants had access to Career Clinics offering practical guidance on career strategy, industry navigation and professional positioning.
The programme also included:
- CV Reviews, providing feedback on how professionals present themselves to German employers;
- Mock Interviews, allowing participants to practise and receive constructive feedback;
- Salary Negotiation, focusing on strategies for negotiating with greater confidence;
- Industry Breakout Rooms, where professionals could discuss sector-specific challenges and opportunities.
These sessions transformed the retreat from a space for simply hearing advice into one where participants could work on the tools they actually use in their professional lives.
Creating Access to Opportunities
Networking was also structured around opportunity.
The retreat featured recruiter networking, giving participants an opportunity to interact with recruiters and hiring professionals.
The Opportunity Marketplace provided another platform for companies, recruiters and professionals to connect around roles, referrals, business ideas and collaboration opportunities.
This was particularly relevant to the retreat’s wider objective of helping Nigerian professionals gain visibility and access to opportunities within Germany.
The value of a professional network is not simply the number of people someone knows. It is the quality of the relationships and the opportunities that can emerge from them.
Beyond Employment: Entrepreneurship and New Ideas
Professional growth was not presented solely through the lens of traditional employment.
The retreat also created space for entrepreneurship through the Startup Pitch Session, where participants could present business ideas and ventures to potential collaborators and supporters.
This reflected the diversity of the NNPG community, which includes professionals working across corporations, startups, research institutions, international organisations and entrepreneurship.
For some participants, the next step may be a new role.
For others, it may be a business, partnership or completely different professional direction.
The retreat made room for all of these possibilities.
Financial Decisions Matter Too
The professional conversation also extended into personal financial planning.
The Financial Planning, Insurance and Investments session featured Rajani Peters, with Dr. Chigozie Nweke-Eze as moderator.
Including financial planning in a career-focused programme reinforced an important point: professional success should ultimately contribute to a sustainable life.
Building income, protecting financial interests and making informed investment decisions are all part of thinking beyond the next job or promotion.
From Inspiration to a Personal Plan
The final day provided an opportunity to move from learning to action.
Sunday’s Reflection & Goal Setting session encouraged participants to process the weekend’s conversations and translate them into concrete goals for their careers and personal development.
This gave the retreat a practical conclusion.
Participants were not simply expected to leave with memories and new contacts. They were encouraged to think about:
What did I learn?
Who do I need to follow up with?
What is my next move?
The retreat was therefore designed as a progression, from connection, to learning, to action.
Building Careers Through Community
The NNPG Retreat 2026 demonstrated the value of creating spaces where professionals can openly discuss the realities of building careers in Germany.
From the insights shared by Burkhard Volbracht, Uzoamaka Audu, Dr. Katrin Ohlau, Waliyat Kola-Aderoju, Chioma Nzekwe, Olalekan Elesin, Barbara Ogechi Madu, Mike A., Iheoma Obasi-Nnadozie and Rajani Peters, to the moderation and guidance provided by Oluwaseun Oguntade and Dr. Chigozie Nweke-Eze, the retreat brought together a range of professional experiences.
The result was more than a weekend of discussions.
It was a space where professionals could ask questions, sharpen their strategies, discover opportunities and build relationships that can continue beyond the event.
That is the value of Connect, Build, Elevate: creating a community where career progress is not pursued in isolation, but strengthened through shared knowledge, relationships and opportunity.
